Louisville Shooting, Incident Details:
On Monday morning, a 23-year-old man wielding a rifle fatally shot four coworkers at a bank in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, according to the police.
The assault left nine others injured, with three in critical condition. The suspect, who police said was live-streaming the carnage, was shot dead by the authorities following an exchange of gunfire at the location.
Deputy Chief Paul Humphrey of the Louisville Metro Police Department stated that they received reports of a shooting at Old National Bank around 8:30 a.m. Upon arrival, officers “quickly encountered the suspect, who was still discharging his weapon.”
Chief Humphrey confirmed that the shooter, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, was pronounced dead at the site. “We are currently uncertain about the specific details surrounding his death,” he added.
While authorities did not provide a reason for the shooting, they mentioned that the gunman had ties to the bank and might have been a present or past employee. “We think a solitary shooter with a connection to the bank is responsible for this incident,” Chief Humphrey stated during a press conference.
The deputy chief reported that four individuals lost their lives within the bank, and a minimum of eight people, comprising a police officer, were transported to a nearby hospital. He mentioned that two individuals were in critical condition, including a police officer who underwent surgery on Monday morning.
Chief Humphrey assured, “As of now, there is no known ongoing threat to the public.”
Located opposite Louisville Slugger Field, a minor-league baseball stadium home to the Louisville Bats, the bank is situated in an area with numerous hotels and apartment buildings.
Heather Fountaine, a spokeswoman for the University of Louisville Hospital, stated in an email that the hospital admitted nine patients from the shooting incident, including two police officers. She mentioned that by early Monday afternoon, at least three patients had been released.
On Monday, Jim Ryan, the CEO of Old National Bank, visited the Louisville building along with other executives.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Mr. Ryan emphasized, “The safety of Old National Bank employees and all our clients in our banking center locations is of utmost importance.” He continued, “While we wait for more information, we are providing employee assistance support and keeping everyone impacted by this tragic event in our thoughts and prayers.”
Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky visited the shooting site and appeared visibly distressed during the Monday morning press conference. “This is terrible,” he remarked. “I have a very close friend who didn’t survive today. And I have another close friend who also didn’t make it, along with one at the hospital whom I hope will pull through. So when we discuss praying, I genuinely hope people will.”
The governor mentioned that he had operated his campaign for attorney general from the bank building and was acquainted with “virtually everyone” inside. “That’s my bank,” he stated.
State Representative Keturah Herron, a Democrat representing part of Louisville, expressed on Twitter that amid holding the community closer, there must also be “outrage and anger.”
